Inauguration of first phase of Kanpur Metro by PM Modi sparks credit war between SP and BJP

The first phase of metro rail in Kanpur is set to start just ahead of next year’s assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, sparking a dispute between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) over the project. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the first phase of Kanpur Metro on December 28. Both the SP and the BJP earlier had problems in taking credit for projects such as the Jewar International Airport, Purvanchal Expressway and the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor.

In the first phase, the metro will run from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel area and will cover a distance of 9 km, with 9 stations. At present, Kanpur will have one metro train with three coaches.

A total of six such metro trains will be operated for the residents of Kanpur after the inauguration by the Prime Minister on December 28.

The estimated cost of the Kanpur Metro project is Rs 11,076.48 crore. The project is expected to be completed in five years. About 40 lakh people are expected to benefit from the new metro rail project.

The SP claimed that it was his project for which the foundation stone was laid in 2016. Speaking to News18, SP spokesperson Abdul Hafiz Gandhi said, “The proposal of Metro in Kanpur was sent by the Samajwadi Party government to the Center in April, 2016. The Center has accepted the proposal sent by the SP government.

“The foundation stone was laid in October, 2016. Hence, the work of Kanpur Metro was started during the SP government. Yogi government is only inaugurating the projects initiated and conceptualized during the Akhilesh Yadav government. BJP has not been able to develop the state. The failure of the BJP on all fronts in the 2022 elections will have to pay a heavy price.

Refuting the SP’s claims, UP BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said, “The Samajwadi Party government could have tested the Lucknow Metro only eight kilometers during its rule, although the Lucknow Metro was properly started by the BJP government. Was. Similarly, it was the BJP government which not only did the trial run of Kanpur Metro, but now we are going to make a proper start in the first phase of nine kilometres. The previous SP government was just lying and busy in commissioning all the projects and hence most of their projects remained incomplete.
