Inauguration of new Parliament: BJP vs Opposition in 10 points

India is all set to get its new Parliament building by the end of this week. The new Parliament building will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 May. Ahead of its inauguration, the building has entered into another controversy, as opposition parties have been criticizing the government for choosing ‘Veer Savarkar Jayanti’ as the opening date.

Here are the ten latest updates on the issue.

Parliament House will be inaugurated on May 28. Apart from the cost, the date of opening of the building has become another contentious issue for the opposition parties. May 28 is the birth anniversary of VD Savarkar, one of the biggest icons of the BJP. The Congress has said that the date is a ‘complete insult’ to the founding fathers of the country.

Hitting out at the Modi government, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of “repeated humiliation of decorum” by not inviting the President and former Presidents for the inauguration.

In his series of tweets, Mallikarjun Kharge said that the President of India represents the people, the government, the opposition and the whole of India.

Joining the Congress’ attack on the BJP, CPI’s D Raja said, “Obsession with self-image and cameras overrides decency and norms when it comes to Modi ji.”

-AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said in his tweet that PM Modi is “the head of the executive, not the legislature.” He referred to the separation of powers in the Indian Parliament and suggested that “the Hon’ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Speaker of the Rajya Sabha could inaugurate” the new Parliament House.

“He (PM Modi) is the head of the executive, not the legislature. We have separation of powers and the honorable Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Speaker could (inaugurate it). It is built with public money, why is the PM behaving like him?” are doing?” AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi tweeted, ‘Friends’ sponsored it from their personal funds.

Responding to the criticism of the opposition, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in his tweet that it is the habit of the Congress to create controversy where there is none. Furthermore, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia described the Congress as “useless”, saying “Veer Savarkar is the pride of every Indian.” He did not call those protesting the date of inauguration as ‘inconsequential’ and even “equal to the dust of Veer Savarkar’s feet”.

Significantly, in the new Parliament House, about 888 members can sit in the Lok Sabha chamber.
