IND vs SL 2nd T20I: Axar Patel, Suryakumar Yadav’s efforts go in vain as India lose to Sri Lanka by 16 runs

In a match of fluctuating fortunes, India’s Axar Patel and Suryakumar matched Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis and Dasun Shanaka’s half-centuries but the hosts eventually lost by 16 runs in the second T20I at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium. Went. (January 5).

Shanaka followed Mendis’ 52 off 31 balls with a 22-ball 56. Sri Lankan Hardik Pandya, who won the toss took advantage of wayward and ineffective Indian bowling to post 206/6 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first.

Chasing a mammoth target, Axar Patel and Suryakumar Yadav rescued India from a precarious 34/5 before they fell short, helping them to make the match. Axar struck a sensational 20-ball fifty while Yadav scored 51 off 33 balls as India recovered from 57/5 to 148/5 when Suryakumar was dismissed. And although Axar Patel and Shivam Mavi struck some quick blows and took India from 57 runs in 24 balls to 20 runs in six balls, in the end the target proved too far away.

Axar Patel hit six sixes and two fours in his brilliant 31-ball 65 and Suryakumar and Mavi (26 off 15 balls) pulled India out of a dangerous 20-run situation in the last six balls. But in the end, the task was too tough for the Gujarat batsman, who played some sensational shots including three sixes off consecutive deliveries in the 14th over. In the last over, Dasun Shanaka dismissed him and dashed India’s hopes.

Suryakumar, who apparently escaped a run-out, pulled off his customary 360-degree game and found an able ally in Axar, after Deepak Hooda was dismissed for 9, as he brought up his century in the innings. Did. Patel hit Wanindu Hasaranga for a hat-trick of sixes in the 14th over and Suryakumar Yadav helped himself to a six, costing Sri Lanka 26 runs in the over. He scored 15 runs in the next over – after hitting six sixes in two overs, Axar Patel brought up his half-century off 20 balls with two fours and six sixes.

India had lost Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi early and when skipper Pandya was out for 12 and Deepak Hooda was out for 9, it looked like their chase would be over.

The Sri Lankan bowlers started brightly but lost their way in the middle overs when Yadav and Patel put on 41 runs in 12 balls (14th and 15th overs), however, they regrouped and fought their way to victory.

Arshdeep Singh made a poor start for the Indian bowlers by sending three wides to give away 17 runs in the second over, Mendis hitting him for two fours and a six. Spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel pulled them back into the game along with Umran Malik, who claimed two wickets in consecutive balls before the pacers again took on Shanaka. Arshdeep sent a total of five no-balls, conceding 37 runs in two overs as Shanaka played some sensational shots to take his team to a big total.

Earlier, after a quiet first over dispatched by Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep bowled a wild spell with three no-balls, and was hit for fours and sixes by Kusal Mendis, conceding 19 runs in the over.

Mendis top-hits Pandya for a six over deep third man, and treats himself to a four straight down the ground off a no-ball from Shivam Mavi, which Arshdeep struggles with his run-up. Sri Lanka were 55/0 at the end of the power-play.

Mendes continued in the same vein. He first lofted Mavi over mid-on for four and then slog-swept Axar Patel over deep mid-wicket for the maximum over. Another six from Umran Malik helped him bring up his half-century off only 27 balls.

But India pulled things back a bit and Yuzvendra Chahal caught Mendis (52, 31b, 3×4, 4×6) lbw with a slider that crushed the batsman for space. The field umpire was taken aback but DRS ruled in favor of the bowler.

Umran Malik dismissed Bhanuka Rajapaksa (2) at 147 kmph and when debutant Rahul Tripathi brilliantly caught Nissanka near the boundary rope off Axar Patel, Sri Lanka were 96/1 in the 12th over. 3 was

Charith Aslanka smashed Chahal for back-to-back sixes over deep-midwicket as Chahal continued to struggle and was dismissed short. He smacked Umran Malik for a six in the same region but J&K’s young tearaway had the last laugh as he had Aslanka (37 off 19 balls) caught by Shubman Gill at deep midwicket boundary as the batsman edged him to the ropes. Tried to hit from above. ,

Malik was on fire and uprooted the stumps at 140 kmph on consecutive deliveries to send Wanindu Hasaranga back for the wicket.
