IND vs WI, 1st T20I: Rohit Sharma breaks big record, beats Virat Kohli

India captain Rohit Sharma played an important role India won the first T20 match against West Indies On Friday at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad. Rohit scored 64 runs in just 44 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes to help India reach a challenging total of 190/6 in 20 overs. The India opener played at a strike rate of 145 and gave his team a thumping start. Along with this, the captain of India also made two big records in his name. Rohit regained the record for most runs in the history of T20Is. He was 20 runs behind New Zealand’s Martin Guptill before the start of the match. Rohit also surpassed former India captain Virat Kohli in the list of most fifties in T20Is.

Kohli is at the second spot with 30 fifty-plus scores, while Rohit Sharma leads the way in T20I cricket with 4 centuries and 27 half-centuries. Kohli has not reached a century in a T20I match. Pakistan captain Babar Azam is third with 27 fifty-plus runs, including a T20I century.

Earlier this week, Guptill surpassed Rohit to become the highest run-scorer in the shortest format. Before the start of the first T20I against West Indies, the Indian captain needed 21 runs to overtake the Kiwi batsman.

Guptill is followed by Kohli (3,308), Ireland’s Paul Stirling (2,894) and Australian captain Aaron Finch, who is fifth with 2,855 runs.

Notably, former India captain Kohli was the first man to break the 3000-run mark in T20Is when he achieved the feat during the second T20I of the home series against England at Ahmedabad in 2021. The 2000-run mark was first crossed eight years ago by Guptill’s compatriot Brendon McCullum. In fact, McCullum was the first player to cross the 1000-run barrier in men’s T20Is as well.
