Star shuttlers PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy won their respective singles matches as India defeated Malaysia to storm into the quarter-finals of the Asia Mixed Team Badminton Championships as group toppers in Dubai on Thursday. Prannoy opened proceedings for India in their final Group B match and came up short against world No. 4 Zi Jia Li before defeating his opponent 18-21 21-13 25-23 in a men’s singles match that lasted an hour and 10 minutes. In contrast, Sindhu took just 34 minutes to beat lower-ranked Ling Ching Wong 21-13, 21-17 in the women’s singles to give India a 2-0 lead.

But the men’s doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Chirag Shetty went down 16-21 10-21 to Aaron Chia and Soe Woo Yik to give Malaysia a 1-2 lead.

Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand saw off Commonwealth Games champions Pearly Tan and Thinah Muralitharanto 23-21 21-15 to give India a 3-1 winning lead. India had earlier thrashed Kazakhstan and United Arab Emirates 5–0 each in their first two group matches.
