India can produce over 5 billion Covid vaccine doses by the end of 2022: PM Modi to G20

Speaking at the G20 summit in Rome, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is ready to produce over 5 billion Covid-19 vaccine doses by the end of 2022 to help the world in the fight against the pandemic. The Indian Prime Minister also highlighted the contribution of the nation in fighting the deadly virus by supplying vaccines and medical supplies.

Speaking to reporters about Modi’s engagements in Rome, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said that the Prime Minister also emphasized the need to facilitate international travel and for this, develop a mechanism for mutual recognition of vaccine certification. .

Noting that WHO approval for emergency use authorization for India’s indigenous vaccine, Covaxin, is pending, Modi suggested that a nod for the jab would help India assist other countries.

A technical advisory group from the United Nations health agency will meet on November 3 to conduct a final “risk-benefit assessment” for Covaxin’s emergency use list. Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and AstraZeneca and Oxford University’s Covishield are two widely used vaccines in India. Sputnik V is the third option.

Modi also highlighted India’s medical supplies in over 150 countries and contribution to maintaining the global supply chain during the pandemic.

Shringla said he made the remarks during his intervention at the “Global Economy and Global Health” session at the G20 meeting.

Emphasizing the need for a resilient global supply chain, Prime Minister Modi talked about India’s bold economic reforms and invited G20 countries to make India their partner in economic recovery and supply chain diversification.

Shringla said Modi also talked about the “One Earth, One Health” vision in the context of fighting the pandemic and future global health issues.
