NITI Aayog member VK Saraswat said on Sunday that India has the potential to come up with its own design of Hyperloop technology for ultra-high-speed travel, as it is going to take time, allowing the country to allow foreign companies to set up one. Saraswat also said that security and regulatory mechanisms should be put in place as security is a major issue in Hyperloop technology. However, he said that the expert committee has not taken any final decision.
The Virgin Hyperloop test run was conducted on November 9, 2020 in Las Vegas in the US with pods, as hyperloop vehicles called, traveling with passengers, including an Indian, through an enclosed tube. Inside and over 100 mph or 161 kph.
Virgin Hyperloop is one of the few companies currently trying to build such a system for passenger travel. “As far as semiconductors are concerned, the government is thinking very seriously about setting up a very strong ecosystem for self-reliance in the semiconductor sector as we have seen severe disruption in the semiconductor supply chain during the pandemic. , thereby affecting our automobile industry and other electronics industries etc,” he said.
On the recent shortage of coal and power in India, Saraswat said that the disruption was due to various logistics problems, both from the point of view of mining activities and transportation activities.
“Now, mining activities have been completely revamped. All mines are working full time. Indian Railways has also got additional trains,” he said, adding that no power in the country is now suffering from coal shortage. The plant is not.
Many thermal power plants in the country were facing crisis due to low coal stocks at their end. Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi had said that the crisis has arisen due to the closure of some mines and submergence of some others due to monsoon.
On the rise in copper imports in the recent past, Saraswat said the government is working to keep primary copper production competitive. “There are some discrepancies today with respect to taxation and things like that. We are trying to look at making it (copper production in India) more cost-effective,” he said.
India was a net exporter of copper for nearly two decades before the closure of the Sterlite Copper plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu in May 2018.
