India, Denmark launch white paper on ‘Urban Wastewater Landscape in India’

New Delhi: India and Denmark have jointly launched a white paper on ‘Urban Wastewater Landscape in India’ along with Denmark at the World Water Congress and Exhibition 2022 in Copenhagen, NITI Aayog said in a statement on Wednesday.

Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat along with Danish Environment Minister Lee Vermelin and Development Cooperation Minister Fleming Möller Mortensen participated in the event.

Speaking during the launch, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said, “Understanding the importance of holistic water management, our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought various water related activities under one umbrella and in 2019 in the name of Jal Shakti, an integrated Ministry has been formed. Seeing greater synergy and coherence for water management in India, we have committed to invest more than $140 billion by 2024 in the water sector.”

The Minister said that with the help of community-centred approach, at least 10% of the funds are contributed by the community in each program ensuring community ownership and participation.

According to the statement issued by NITI Aayog, the objective of the white paper is to comprehensively capture the current status of wastewater treatment in India and possible avenues for future treatment structures, co-creation and collaboration.

This white paper is an outcome of the Green Strategic Partnership between India and Denmark with a focus on Green Hydrogen, Renewable Energy and Wastewater Management and their bilateral relations.
