India has integrated climate protection in its national development: MoS Lekhi

Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi today said that India has taken many bold steps on clean energy, energy efficiency, afforestation and biodiversity. and added that it has integrated climate protection into its national development and industrial strategies.

Lekhi, speaking at the Impact Finance Conference 2021 in Bern, Switzerland, said that New Delhi’s focus is also on cutting energy consumption and efficient management of the energy produced.

He said, “India has also encouraged global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. 80 countries have joined the International Solar Alliance, making it one of the fastest growing international organizations anywhere. has been made.”

Referring to the Paris climate summit, Lekhi said, five years ago, global leaders resolved to limit global temperature rise by gradually reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

“We need to take climate action in a nationally determined manner based on some fundamentally agreed principles, the most prominent of which is ‘common but differentiated responsibility and related capabilities’,” she said.

He highlighted that India is expected to reduce the carbon intensity of its GDP by 33-35%, increase the share of non-fossil fuel energy sources in electricity generation capacity to at least 40%, and increase it to 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes. Committed to create additional carbon sinks of Rs. Equivalent to CO2 by 2030. This is despite having the lowest per capita carbon emissions in the world.

“To honor this commitment, we have supplied 1.2 billion energy-efficient LED lamps and 3.2 million LED streetlights. We are also on a mission to make India the world’s largest green hydrogen hub. Apart from focusing on energy, India has placed sustainability at the center of its development goals in various other areas as well.

He said the “Jal Jeevan Mission”, which aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water to all households in rural India through individual household connections by 2024, has a strong sustainability focus.
