India in South Africa | Consistency the key to developing a speed pack: Vernon Philander

Vernon Philander had a unique ability to bowl straight lines and seam the ball on both sides from the off-stump line.

in conversation with Hindu “The most important thing is to execute your plans when your team needs it,” said Philander, who took 224 wickets in 64 Tests here on Wednesday.

Extremely accurate, Philander said he regained his control with limitless practice. “I want to take my skills off the game, come fully prepared and show it during the match.”

Particularly dangerous with the new ball, often penetrating, Philander was also a lower-order batsman.

“I could have taken it across him but my most dangerous ball was the one that hit the left-hander,” he said.

And he formed a powerful combination with Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel. “We were a perfect combination. Steyn could swing the ball fast from both sides, I could sew it up and Morkel was a fistful with his quick bounce.

Philander revealed, “The important thing is that we understood each other’s roles, had that understanding and communication.”

Dale Steyn was the fast bowler he admired the most and Michael Clarke was the toughest batsman he bowled at.

Regarding the current crop of South African fast bowlers, Philander said, “We have not seen Enrique Nortje in this series. He can bowl at 150 kmph and can be hostile. Had he played, we would have had a completely different series.”

Philander said, ‘The attack is still inexperienced. Rabada has played the most matches. Jensen is tall, bouncy and slippery. He is a good bouncer. But you need consistency in selection to develop the pack.”

When asked about the Indian pace attack, Philander said, “Shami’s seam position is very good. He’s also skiddy and wins a lot of leg before appeal. With a unique action, Bumrah can trample the batsmen with his speed and bounce. And he has a great yorker.”

Philander said, ‘There is no weak link in this Indian attack. Siraj is good and I am very impressed with the skill and attitude shown by Shardul in this Test.
