India may conduct naval exercises with France, Germany

According to people familiar with the matter, India, Germany and France are considering holding a trilateral naval exercise.

As the environment in the Indo-Pacific turns competitive, the three countries are looking to hold the exercise sometime next year.

While India and France have been close defense partners for the past few decades, Germany is a relatively new entrant in the region.

in an interview with PeppermintGerman Ambassador Philipp Ackermann indicated that his country would increase its naval presence in the Indo-Pacific by the end of the year.

Queries to the foreign ministries of the three countries were not answered at press time.

“I think Indo-Pacific is a catchword that resonates very clearly for us. We will see in the coming months and years that Germany will be more proactive with its partners, including India. It certainly won’t be on a large scale, but I think there is no doubt that the Indo-Pacific as a region that is not completely free of tension will be higher on our agenda than ever before,” Ackerman said.

“We are planning for new ships to come in the Indo-Pacific. Ships won’t come in the immediate future but I think in a year or so we’ll see something on this.”

European countries have viewed the Indo-Pacific with greater interest in recent years. Economic importance of the region: Supply chains passing through the western Pacific and Indian Oceans have made it a foreign policy and defense priority of Europe.

Recognizing this, France has strengthened its traditional position as a military partner for India.

India and France conduct three biennial training exercises-eagle with the Air Force Varun with the Navy Power with the army.

The German frigate FGS Bayern visited Mumbai last year as a sign of Berlin’s interest in achieving a closer partnership with the country.
