New Delhi: India registered 5,676 new Covid-19 cases and 21 deaths in the last 24 hours, showed the Union Health Ministry’s update on Tuesday. The total number of active cases stood at 37,093.
The country has so far recorded 44.9 million cases and 531,000 deaths.
According to epidemiologists, the rising number of Covid cases is now doubling every 4-5 days and the country is now reporting more than 5,000 cases per day.
Scientists have said that the XBB.1.16 variant of the coronavirus is responsible for the current surge in cases. But there is a relief that the infection is believed to be mild in nature and may not increase the hospitalization rate as Indians have developed hybrid immunity due to vaccination and natural exposure to the disease. However, the Center has urged people to wear masks in crowded places and complete vaccination doses.
The Union Health Ministry has directed states and union territories to follow a risk assessment-based approach to try and contain the infection. Ministry advises State Governments to monitor the COVID-19 situation at the micro level (district and sub-districts) and focus on implementation of necessary measures for quick and effective management of COVID-19 while ensuring effective compliance .
“The five-fold strategy, ie, test-track treat-vaccinate, should be followed with continued focus on adequate and proactive testing as per the guidelines, along with surveillance of new and emerging clusters of new Covid-19 cases Influenza-like tendency should be monitored. disease (ILI) and SARI cases in all health facilities or through dedicated fever clinics regularly to detect early warning signs of spread of infection,” the health ministry said, adding that there are some states which report high number of cases. indicating possible local spread of infection.
Across the country with Karnataka reporting 1,673 active cases, Kerala 1,3745 active cases, Maharashtra 4,667 cases, Gujarat 1,932 cases, Delhi 2,338 cases, Tamil Nadu 2,099 active cases and Himachal Pradesh reporting 1,762 cases so far Covid cases are increasing slowly.
Around 4,42,00,079 people have recovered from the infection, taking the current recovery rate to 98.76%.
Under the Covid vaccination campaign, more than 220.66 crore vaccine doses have been given to people across the country so far. About 358 vaccine doses were given in the last 24 hours.
