India reports 140 new covid cases in 24 hours

India has reported 140 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, the union health ministry data stated on Sunday. Meanwhile, the number of active caseloads stands at 2,450 taking the total number of covid cases to over 4.49 crore

For the past one month, the covid cases have drastically declined after surge due to XBB.1.16 Omicron variant.

The covid pandemic which started in early 2020 has killed around 5,31,891 people in India so far.

Health experts say that the number of hospital admissions have also come down as lesser number of covid cases are being reported. However, elderly people with comorbidities are still vulnerable to the infection. Furthermore, doctors have recommended such people to take their booster dose if not done yet and follow covid appropriate behaviour.

In addition to this, scientists say that people in India have developed hybrid immunity (due to vaccination and natural infection), therefore, the present covid-19 variants will not be able cause hospitalization and severity since it is mild in nature.

A total of 44,458,447 people have recovered from the infection so far with 188 patients recovering in the past 24 hours. The current recovery rate is around 98.81 %.

The health ministry has advised the state governments to examine the situation of covid-19 at micro level (district &sub-districts) and maintain focus on implementation of necessary measures for prompt and effective management of covid-19, ensuring effective compliance.

The government has asked the states to follow the Test-Track Treat-Vaccination strategy. Around 71,703 tests were conducted in a day taking the total number of tests to 92.93 crore.

Under the covid vaccination drive, more than 220.67 crore vaccine doses have been administered to the people across the country so far. In the last 24 hours, around 946 vaccine doses were administered.
