NEW DELHI: India recorded a spike of 514 coronavirus infections in 24-hour period, according to Union health ministry data released on January 11.
As of Thursday, India’s active Covid-19 caseload stood at 3,422. With three more deaths reported in a span of 24 hours, two from Maharashtra and one from Karnataka, the country’s death toll currently stands at 5,33,409.
While the number of daily Covid cases had dropped below 100 until December 5, 2023, cases started to rise amid a new variant (JN.1) and the drop in temperature. JN.1, an Omicron lineage descendant, is categorized by the World Health Organization as a “variant of interest”.
The number of active Covid-19 cases increased in several states, according to ministry data updated at 8am on Thursday.
With 44,483,502 people having recovered from the illness so far, the country’s recovery rate is 98.81 per cent. The current fatality rate is 1.81 per cent, the health ministry’s website said.
A total of 682 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant of Covid-19 have been reported from 12 states across the country till January 6. The government has advised people not to panic but, as a precautionary measure, suggested that individuals with comorbidities use face masks.
As per the health ministry website, 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines have so far been administered in the country.
The highest number of daily new cases and deaths from Covid-19 were recorded during the Delta wave, which occurred in April and June, 2021. India has already experienced three waves of the virus. At its peak, 414,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths were reported on May 7, 2021.
Meanwhile, the WHO stated on Wednesday that about 10,000 cases of Covid-19 fatalities were recorded in December, and cautioned that the virus continues to pose a serious hazard even if it had partially escaped detection.
