India “strongly condemns” the terrorist attack in Israel’s Jerusalem

In a tweet, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi, said that India “strongly” condemned Friday night’s terrorist attack in Israel’s Jerusalem. He also expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

“We strongly condemn the terrorist attack in Jerusalem last night. We express our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Arindam Bagchi said in a tweet. Arindam Bagchi’s statement came after Israeli police said at least seven people were killed and three were injured in a shooting near a synagogue in Jerusalem on Friday.

Earlier, Israel’s Ambassador to India Nour Gilon said that they are overwhelmed by the “widespread support” from India following the terrorist attack in Jerusalem. Citing a police statement, CNN said the attack happened at around 8.15 pm (local time) near a synagogue on Neve Yaakov Street.

Gillon tweeted, “We are grateful for the outpouring of support from #India following the terrorist attack in #Jerusalem on Jews visiting synagogue on Shabbat. 7 killed and 3 injured. Women , men, old, young. Thanks to the police forces.” The one who shot the terrorist.

In a statement, police confirmed that the shooting suspect was killed after police personnel arrived at the scene. CNN reported that according to a preliminary report released by Jerusalem police, the incident is being treated as a suspected terrorist attack. Police have identified the shooter as a 21-year-old from East Jerusalem

“As a result of the firing attack, 7 civilians are known to have died and 3 others have been injured,” CNN quoted police as saying.

Police Chief Yaakov Shabtai described the incident as “one of the worst terrorist attacks in the past few years”, reports CNN. Israel’s Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency rescue service said five of the victims of the shootings were pronounced dead at the scene. Five people were taken to a hospital, where another man and woman were pronounced dead.
