India to send disaster relief team to earthquake-hit Turkey

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed that India will provide “all possible assistance” to Turkey to deal with the devastating earthquake that struck the country on the morning of February 6. The decision to help Turkey was taken in a meeting headed by Turkish Principal Secretary PK Mishra. Prime Minister which was attended by the Cabinet Secretaries and representatives of the concerned Ministries.

The meeting decided to “immediately” send the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) search and rescue team and medical professionals.

Accordingly, two NDRF teams consisting of 100 personnel along with specially trained dog squads and medical personnel have been prepared for deployment in the disaster-affected Turkish region. In addition to the specialized NDRF teams, medical teams consisting of doctors and paramedics are also being “ready” with medical supplies.

A press release from the Prime Minister’s Office stated that “relief materials will be sent in coordination with the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Embassy of India in Ankara and the Consulate General Office in Istanbul”.
