A controversial DRS decision caused a major uproar Day 3 of the ongoing third Test Match between India and South Africa. Dean Elgar got a big relief in the 21st over of South Africa’s second innings despite being declared lbw by umpire Marais Erasmus. On reviewing this, Elgar found that the ball was going over the stumps which was not well received by Virat Kohli and his teammates. This was followed by a sharp reaction from the visiting team, which went to the stump-mic and expressed dissatisfaction with the decision. Speaking on Star Sports, former cricketer Aakash Chopra compared it to an incident in the 2011 ODI World Cup, when Sachin Tendulkar got a similar relief to Dean Elgar. Chopra also said that Team India did not complain about the controversial decision in 2011 and “took it forward”.
“There are two things here. I remember it was 2011, India vs Pakistan, semifinal match in Mohali. Saeed Ajmal is bowling, Sachin Tendulkar is batting, Ian Gould is the umpire. He gives him out. We all Thought he was dead and plumb. Front. Then DRS, the ball-tracking technology of the time somehow showed the ball was missing the stumps. Not even kissing it. We all thought it was a miracle “Did we really complain that much at the time? No, we didn’t”, Chopra said.
“We carried it as it went out. Now it’s definitely something in the heat of the moment when you get excited”, he adds.
The 44-year-old further added that Dean Elgar was also surprised by the third umpire’s decision as he too was going to the pavilion.
“You are disappointed because even looking at the screen, I was surprised how exactly it missed because it looked like it had crashed on the stumps. If you look at Dean Elgar’s facial expressions he was told that He is not out, had a sly smile that, “Okay, did I just get out of jail” because I thought it was out too. Because when he took the DRS he was more in hope and less in faith”, he said.
Despite Ravichandran Ashwin failing to take the wicket of Elgar in the 21st over, the Proteas skipper was eventually dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah in the 30th over.
