Defense Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary after the accident. “Deeply saddened by the loss of two air warriors in the crash of a MiG-21 trainer aircraft of the Indian Air Force near Barmer, Rajasthan,” Singh said on Twitter.

The fighter jet involved in the incident is reportedly a two-seat MiG-21 fighter jet from the 1960s used by the Air Force. Primarily built for aerial interception with a secondary role of ground attack, the MiG-21 is capable of operating in restricted spaces and hence played a vital role in the Kargil War.
