Indian Coast Guard is now one of the world’s leading maritime forces: Rajnath

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said on Saturday that the Indian Coast Guard initially started with less than six boats and today it has over 150 ships and 66 aircraft, making it one of the world’s leading maritime forces.

Speaking at the decoration ceremony at the National Stadium Complex here, he said that the development of the maritime force has been possible because of the morale, enthusiasm and energy shown by the Indian Coast Guard.

Appreciating the professionalism of the force, he said that its growth and confidence helped the people in many crisis situations.

Emphasizing on the importance of maritime security, the Defense Minister said, “We are prosperous and connected to the world because of our seas and its routes.”

He said that its influence is clearly visible in our festivals, culture, religions and lifestyles.

Rajnath Singh also stressed on the importance of security for the coastal states and a comprehensive internal and external security framework.

With regard to the force’s pollution response to douse the massive fire that broke out at the container carrier MV X-Press Pearl near Colombo Port, Sri Lanka, he commended the Coast Guard.

He said such services have helped in avoiding environmental hazards promoting the country’s image at the international level.

On the occasion, the Defense Minister presented gallantry, meritorious service medals to the Coast Guard personnel.

The Indian Coast Guard was formally established on 1 February 1977 by the Coast Guard Act, 1978. It functions under the Ministry of Defence.
