Indian first, person later: Law students from Rajasthan governor

Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra said on Thursday that the primary identity of every Indian citizen is that of an ‘Indian’ and his personal identity is secondary to it. Speaking at the first convocation of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Law University in Birla Auditorium, the Governor described the Constitution as first and foremost.

“The Constitution has given us rights. We have also been given fundamental duties. We all need to be aware of them.” The Governor said, “We should remember that we are Indians first.

Mishra also called upon the law students to work towards removing inequalities, gender discrimination and sex crimes in the society and to create awareness about the rights of women and the underprivileged.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also addressed the function and said that if the common man develops the understanding of the Preamble, Fundamental Duties and the basic elements of the Constitution, then many problems of the country including class discrimination will automatically go away. In the ceremony, the Chancellor of the university, Mishra conferred degrees to 38 students who passed LLM (one year) and gave merit certificates to three girl students.
