Indian Railways electrified 37,011 kilometer track in last 9 years

The national transporter on Thursday said that in the last nine years, the Indian Railways has electrified 37,011 route kilometer (RKM) tracks. Between India’s independence and 2014, only 21,413 RKM of railway tracks were electrified.

However, in the last nine years, the pace of electrification in the country has picked up significantly, with a record-breaking 37,011 route kilometers of tracks being electrified in the last nine years, taking the total electrified routes in the Indian Railways network to 58,424. RKM, which accounts for 90 per cent of the total, said.

“About 50 per cent of the total route kilometer was completed in the last five years only. Indian Railways aims to become the world’s largest green railway with zero carbon emissions by 2030. It has already achieved 100 per cent railway electrification. Railways said that significant steps are being taken towards achieving this ambitious target in 14 States/UTs.

Indian Railways plans to gradually move towards the use of green energy for traction and non-traction purposes, which will enable the country to become a net zero carbon emitter by 2030.
