Indian U-17 Women’s Football Team Eyes Huge Opportunity Against Brazil

Indian U-17 women’s football team head coach Thomas Dennerby wants his girls to be more confident with the ball while attacking while playing Brazil in their final Group A match of the FIFA U-17 women’s section. World Cup on Monday, October 17, 2022 at Kalinga Stadium. The match will start at 8 pm Indian time.

“When we have the ball, we need to feel comfortable and start playing. We need to be confident and play a little more. Now we have nothing to lose. I hope the girls start playing freely,” Dennerby said on the eve of the match.

host India They have already crashed out of the World Cup after losing their first two group league matches against the United States (0-8) and Morocco (0-3). On Monday, they are pitted against the mighty Brazil, considered a force in women’s football. Brazil’s senior girls have been ranked ninth in the latest FIFA rankings released earlier this week.

Dennerby is very aware of Brazil’s reputation, but at the same time, he feels that his players are capable of proving themselves on the pitch. “We have to pay a lot of attention to defence, but we also know that football is not just about defence. It will be good for us to score in the tournament.”

“Hopefully we can have another good performance. Brazil is a good team. And we also know that Brazil is struggling to cement its place in the knockout stage. So, I think they are going to come out with all the guns,” said the coach.

Dennerby said Indian girls are ready to play for their honor against Brazil.

We will fight and try to score goals. It would be nice to come out of this tournament with a goal,” he said. “We’ve worked on the last important pass – the action around the opponents’ box. It’s also the hardest part of football – learning how to handle a situation like that.”

“The girls need a better understanding of decision-making – we have to work a little with skill in those crucial moments, because in the end all games result in two boxes,” said the Swedish coach.

India’s senior national women’s team played against Brazil in November 2021 and lost 1-6. The coach believes that Brazil’s senior and junior players have similarities in their playing styles.

“The playing style of this team is similar. Of course, they’re not that efficient right now, but it’s normal when you’re 17. I would say it is even more difficult to play against a young team, because in a senior team, you have the best players from your country. When you play for an age group, you have to pick players from a particular age group,” he said.

“Back in Brazil, they start playing football from a very young age which is a huge advantage. But hopefully tomorrow we can show them that we have a good starting XI in India as well.”

Shilki Devi, who was used as a substitute in the senior team’s match against Brazil, said: “I know how strong the Brazilians are – their fitness level and the way they attack. I was lucky to get to play against him for a while and it was a great learning experience for me. His pace, his passing accuracy and the quick decisions he took were things that I saw during that match. ,

“It will be another great opportunity for us to score against such strong rivals, but we have to do it tomorrow,” he said. It is now a matter of our pride and honour,” the defender said.

Striker Linda Kom also believes that this will be a good opportunity for the team to do their best and play a good brand of football against strong opponents.

“We want to score against Brazil and have a strong performance. We will not give up and will throw whatever we have because this will be our last match in the current World Cup,” said Linda.

The match will be live on Sports18.
