Indians unwilling to pay more for 5G; Reduction in call drops main reason for shifting to 5G: Survey

With 5G coming to India, the biggest highlight is 10X internet speed as compared to 4G, but if a survey by LocalCircles is to be believed, Indian mobile users are keen to see less call drops rather than higher data speeds. Also, Indian users are not willing to pay more extra to buy a 5G plan instead of 4G.

LocalCircle conducted a national survey to find out people’s expectations from 5G and how willing they are to upgrade to the new technology that promises better connectivity and faster downloads. The survey received over 29,000 responses from mobile service users located in 318 districts of India. 64% of the respondents were male while 36% of the respondents were female. 47% respondents were from Tier 1, 34% were from Tier 2 and 19% respondents were from Tier 3, 4 and rural districts.

In the first survey mobile customers were asked, “India will soon have 5G telecom services. How much more are you willing to pay for these services on a monthly basis?”. In response, 43% of the respondents said that they were “not willing to pay anything more than the existing tariff for 3G/4G services”. While another 43% expressed willingness to pay 10% higher tariff.Out of 10,019 respondents, only 10% expressed willingness to pay 10-25% higher tariff and another 2% 25-50% higher tariff The remaining 2% did not give any clear answer.

The next survey question attempted to understand the status of the equipment that mobile customers currently have and if it is 5G compliant or they would need to buy a new device to avail 5G services. Respondents asked the question, “Most existing phones/tablets are unlikely to work with 5G services and therefore consumers will need to buy a device that supports 5G. When can you do that?” 20% of respondents indicated that they “already have a device that supports 5G”.

Of the 9,965 respondents to this question, 4% shared a plan to purchase new suitable equipment this year; 12% in the first half of 2023; 8% in the second half of 2023; The other 10% are expected to buy in 2024 as the devices are expensive. Almost one in four or 24% of respondents shared that they have no plans to buy a new upgraded device in the near future, while another 22% have not made up their mind yet. ,

In the last question in the survey, LocalCircle tried to ask mobile customers about their expectations from 5G services. Respondents were asked the question, “Based on your understanding so far, what should 5G offer you in order to be able to spend money on a 5G device and a more expensive service plan?” 19% expect a reduction in call drops and connectivity issues or a better voice network (1); 5% better availability of data networks (2); 12% improvement in internet speed (3). About 3% of 10,000 respondents also expect a drop in spam or unwanted calls and messages (4). For 39% of the respondents, it is important to address all four conditions before deciding to upgrade to 5G. Only 5% of the respondents indicated that they were confident that 5G would solve all these issues while 17% were not.
