Indians urged to postpone Sudan travel plans due to armed forces clash

Indians have been urged to postpone travel to Sudan in the wake of ongoing clashes between rival military factions. Fighting broke out on Saturday between the Sudanese army and the country’s main paramilitary force, leaving three people dead and several others injured.

The development comes after rising tensions between generals and years of political unrest following an October 2021 military coup. The clashes began on Saturday morning, with both sides accusing each other of starting the violence.

“In view of reports of firing and clashes, all Indians in Sudan are advised to exercise extreme caution, stay indoors and refrain from venturing out with immediate effect. Indians planning to travel to Sudan should postpone their trip. Please also remain calm and wait for updates,” read an update shared by the Indian Embassy in Khartoum.

Paramilitary forces took control of Khartoum airport on Saturday afternoon, reportedly killing two civilians. The clashes also forced the cancellation of commercial flights to Sudan as Saudi Arabian planes turned back after nearly landing at the airport.
