According to power ministry data, electricity consumption in the country rose 13.6% year-on-year to 132.98 billion units (BU) in April, showing the impact of the onset of summer and a pick-up in economic activity.

Last year in April, the electricity consumption was recorded at 117.08 BU, which was up from 84.55 BU in the corresponding month of 2020.

On the other hand, the highest demand for electricity was met during April this year, the highest in a single day, which stood at an all-time high of 207.11 GW. The maximum power supply was 182.37 GW in April 2021 and 132.73 GW in April 2020.

Electricity consumption and demand were also affected in April 2020 due to the imposition of lockdown restrictions to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus. Electricity consumption in April 2019 (pre-epidemic period) was 110.11 billion units.

Experts are of the view that there has been an unexpected increase in electricity consumption and demand, mainly due to the onset of summer and indicating that more economic activities are increasing the commercial and industrial requirements of electricity in the country.

A third wave of the pandemic hit the country in January, forcing many states to impose local restrictions such as night and weekend curfews. He had also taken measures like banning food in bars and restaurants. These restrictions were gradually eased by the states.

Experts believe that there will be a tremendous increase in the demand and consumption of electricity in the coming months as the states have lifted almost all the local restrictions following the decline in the positivity rate.

According to experts, in the coming months after the easing of lockdown restrictions and due to longer summers in the coming months, electricity consumption will increase with the increase in industrial and commercial activities.
