An Indonesian court on Thursday sentenced a football match official to one-and-a-half years in prison after finding him guilty of negligence in one of the world’s deadliest stadium stampedes.

An October 2022 derby match in Malang, East Java between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya ended in chaos with 135 spectators killed, many crushed to death as they scrambled to exit after police fired tear gas into the crowd. ran away.

The match official, Abdul Haris, was found guilty of “killing people because of his negligence”, said the judge in a court in Surabaya.

The legal team for the defendant did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

An investigation by Indonesia’s Human Rights Commission found that the main cause of the stampede was the firing of 45 rounds of tear gas at the crowd, which is banned by football’s world governing body FIFA as a crowd control measure.

Another match official will announce his verdict on Thursday, while three police officers have also been charged with similar offenses and their cases will be decided at a later date.
