New Delhi: At least 25 per cent of the recently reported diabetes cases have a confirmed history of COVID-19, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital officials said here on Friday, citing its two-year OPD data.

He said that among people with a confirmed history of moderate to severe coronavirus infection, various recurring and new health ailments have been reported.

Hospital experts said post-Covid inflammatory reactions can include hypoxia, weakness, weight loss, hair loss, myocarditis, thyroid and diabetes, which are being reported as one of the most common diseases.

Various global studies have reported an increasing prevalence of newly diagnosed diabetes cases with a history of COVID-19, the hospital group claimed in a statement.

Based on this available insight, doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital studied this development and noted it through “detailed internal OPD data” of nearly two years, it claimed.

Dr Subhash Kumar Wangnu, Senior Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, Apollo Center for Obesity, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said, “Our data from OPDs has shown that in patients who had confirmed COVID infection, about 25 per cent new were- the onset of diabetic patients.

“Stress-induced hyperglycemia was observed in 10 per cent of the patients who had a covid infection. More than 60 per cent of patients with established diabetes (already diabetic) showed worsening glycemic status, which persisted for more than 3 months,” he said.

Diabetes itself is an inflammatory condition, which poses the risk of an inflammatory response along with COVID-19, leading to an increase in blood glucose levels, the statement said.

The use of steroids worsened glucose levels in patients due to severe manifestations of COVID-19 in treatment. Experts said that the stress response due to acute infection, such as covid, increases blood values through Hb1ac, which may be normal.

“This is what we call the new onset of diabetes due to Kovid-19,” he said.
