Industry experts may soon teach as university faculty members

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is contemplating to introduce a system under which experts can teach as full-time or part-time faculty members in central universities. It is not necessary for a specialist to have PhD or NET qualification to teach in Universities, Apart from this, those who have retired at the age of 60 will also be eligible for these posts and will be able to work till the age of 65 years.

According to news agency PTI, a special post will be created for industry experts such as professor of practice and associate professor of practice. Under the proposal, experts who are willing to teach can be appointed as full-time or part-time faculty members depending on the need of the university, the official said.

the officer said that UGC A committee will be formed to look into how this can be done and it will submit its report. Under the proposal, a new portal would be set up which would act as a single point for those wishing to apply to the university.

However, a section of teachers has reacted to this decision of the UGC. According to the news agency, Delhi University professor Abha Dev Habib said that the government is “liberating itself from the pressure of giving jobs to deserving teachers on a permanent basis”.

“Teachers who have been teaching for the last several years are not “experts” and cannot be made permanent or even shortlisted for permanent interview (as happens in many departments of Delhi University) But people labeled “experts” by the BJP-RSS can be parachuted into any system,” she said in a Facebook post.

Aishe Ghosh, president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union, tweeted: “A step towards ending higher education.”

As per the minimum qualification of UGC for appointment of teachers and other educationists, PhD is mandatory for seeking admission as Professor or Associate Professor in a university.
