According to Saklani, several important chapters were shortened as a result of the rationalization, but he added that this “should not be blown out of proportion” and that all the changes made to the textbooks would be announced within a few days. .

In the controversy over removal of some material related to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination from NCERT textbooks without any notification, NCERT chief Dinesh Saklani said it could be an “oversight” that some removal was not announced in the rationalization exercise last year Went.

According to Saklani, several important chapters were shortened as a result of the rationalization, but he added that this should not be blown “out of proportion” and that all changes made to textbooks would be announced within a few days.

Saklani’s comments came after the new NCERT textbooks, which hit the market, were found to be missing more material than the syllabus rationalization manual from last year.

Some of the lessons missing from the Class 12 Political Science textbook for the new academic session are “Gandhiji’s death had a magical effect on the communal situation in the country”, “Gandhi’s quest for Hindu-Muslim unity provoked Hindu extremists” and ” Organizations like the RSS “were banned for some time”.

“The subject expert panel had recommended dropping some texts on Gandhi. It was accepted only last year. It was not mentioned in the list of rational ingredients due to oversight. It should not be blown out of proportion, Saklani told PTI.

“Nothing can be left overnight, there are proper procedures and professional ethics have to be followed. There is nothing intentional behind this,” he said.

According to Saklani, there has been no syllabus trimming this year and the syllabus was rationalized in June.

When asked if there is more such material for other subjects and classes that were removed and not announced as part of the rationalization process, the NCERT chief replied, “We are looking into it”.

“If we find more material that was missed due to the mistake, we will inform them soon…mostly within a day or two,” he added.

Last year, as part of its “syllabus rationalisation” exercise, the NCERT removed certain parts from its textbooks, including lessons on Gujarat riots, Mughal courts, Emergency, Cold War, Naxalite movement, citing reasons such as “overlapping” and “overlapping”. removed. Irrelevant”.

No passage about Gandhi was included in the Rationalization Note.

The Congress called the government’s action a “cover-up with a vengeance”.

There is a note on the NCERT website which states, “In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is considered necessary to reduce the content load on the students. National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 also lays emphasis on reducing the content load and providing opportunities for experiential learning with a creative mindset. In this background, the NCERT started the exercise of rationalizing textbooks for all classes and all subjects. -23 and will continue in 2023-24,” it adds.
