International Day of Women Judges, observed annually on 10 March, celebrates women judges who have led from the front in the fight against social injustice.

International Day of Women Judges 2023: The road to equal representation of the sexes in all spheres of civil society was long and arduous, fraught with discrimination and inequality. In India, this changed with Anna Chandy, who became the first woman judge of a high court in 1937. In 1989, Fathima Beevi became the first woman judge of the Supreme Court of India.

Many Indian women like Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the United States and women around the world have added to the illustrious list of women judges bringing balance to the usually male-dominated legal system.

International Day of Women Judges: History

To honor women judges across the world and their contribution towards justice, equality and fairness in society, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided to observe an International Day for Women Judges. This development comes in the wake of an International Conference of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Doha, Qatar from February 24 to 27, 2020.

At the conference, The Institute for African Women in Law (IAWL) highlighted the need for judiciaries to encourage and develop a culture of respect and enforcement of women’s rights. Sexual harassment and intimidation of women in the legal profession, especially women judges, was also discussed.

Resolution 75/274 was adopted by the UNGA on April 28, 2021, declaring March 10 as the International Day of Women Judges. International Women Judges Day was observed for the first time on March 10, 2022.

International Day of Women Judges: Significance

International Day of Women Judges is not only an important day to celebrate women judges in global legal institutions. It is a symbolic day for gender equality, equality of opportunities and fight against gender based discrimination present in various strata of the society.
