International Women’s Day 2023: Every year on March 8, the world celebrates women and their contribution to society. While one day is not enough to pay tribute to all that a woman does for others, International Women’s Day is a way of encouraging every woman to spread her wings and fly without inhibitions. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated on February 28, 1909 in New York. Later, during the International Women’s Conference of 1910, March 8 was suggested by all and since then this day was celebrated as Women’s Day. Purple, green and white are the colors of IWD, according to the International Women’s Day website.
International Women’s Day 2023: Theme
The theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is ‘DigitalAll: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’. According to the United Nations, women make up only 22 percent of artificial intelligence (AI) workers globally. The United Nations says, “From the early days of computing to the current age of virtual reality and artificial intelligence, women have made untold contributions to the digital world we increasingly live in. Their achievements have been against all odds, a In an area where they have historically been neither welcomed nor appreciated.”
International Women’s Day 2023: History and Significance
Back in 1908, a total of 15,000 women started a march through New York City US to demand better pay, shorter working hours and the right to vote. A year later, the Socialist Party of America at the Socialist International meeting in Copenhagen proclaimed the day as the first National Women’s Day. Through the years, several changes and new objectives were brought in to further enhance the meaning of the day and in 2015, countries adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It has Goal 5 “Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls”.
In many countries, such as Cuba, Armenia, Mongolia, Russia, Uganda and Ukraine, International Women’s Day is an official holiday.
