Apple’s next-gen chipset, the A18 Pro, is shaping up to be a big upgrade compared to the A17 Pro and may even beat M3’s single-core score when it launches.

Recent rumours indicate that Apple’s A18 Pro chipset, which is expected to power the iPhone 16 Pro models that will be released in September of this year, is anticipated to feature substantial gains in single-core performance. This suggests that it may be significantly more powerful than the current flagship chipset, the A17 Pro, as well as the M3 chipset in single-core tests.

As per X user @neagtiveomehero, Apple’s hexa-core A18 Pro chipset reportedly scored a whopping 3,500 points on the single-core test and 8,200 on the multi-core test on Geekbench 6. When comparing these numbers to the A17 Pro, a noticeable increase in both single and multi-core scores is evident. The current chipset scores around 2,800-2,900 points in the single score and approximately 7,200 in the multi-core score.

This roughly translates to a gain of around 20% in single-core scores. Comparing these directly to Apple’s M3 chip, which powers its latest Macs, the A18 Pro scores higher in the single-core category, clocking around 3,170 points.

Comparing the A18 Pro scores to those of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which is reportedly the next-generation chipset set to replace the recently released Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the Apple flagship chip falls short of the Qualcomm flagship scores in the multi-core test. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 has allegedly scored 2,845 in the single-core and 10,628 in the multi-core test.

That said, these are just rumours for now and should be taken with a grain of salt until we have something more concrete from Apple.
