iPhones Are Susceptible to Malware Attacks Even When Switched Off: What It Means

Apple has talked proudly about the privacy and security measures of the iPhone for years, but a new report suggests that even when the iPhone is turned off, it is prone to malware attacks. The discovery was made by a team of researchers from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, who claim that Apple’s popular Find My iPhone feature is the culprit for the vulnerability.

As you might be aware, the Find My iPhone feature does not require the device to be turned on, instead it uses the Bluetooth chip to locate the phone if it is lost or lost. And the team noticed that the Bluetooth chip’s firmware is not encrypted, making it vulnerable to malicious attacks.

The details of the findings have been shared through their report, titled, “Evil Never Sleeps: When Wireless Malware Remains On After Turning Off the iPhoneThis suggests that while the Bluetooth chip’s low-power mode is designed with its purpose in mind, Apple might not have thought about its security aspect, which is why iPhones running iOS 15 version have this feature. The loophole can be exploited using .

But all is not all doom for iPhone users right now, as the research team quickly points out that in order to circumvent this security issue, the attacker would need an iPhone that has been jailbroken. Given that most iPhones on the market aren’t jailbroken (since you lose the official Apple warranty on the device), it’s possible that the threat level of such an attack isn’t too worrying for Apple.
