With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season resuming on 19 September, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) played a practice match at their training venue Dubai. NS M S DhoniCoach Lakshmipathy Balaji said that the warm-up match will help them build momentum for the resumption of IPL 2021. The tournament was postponed mid-May due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the bio-secure bubble. Posting the video on Instagram, CSK captioned it, “Nets off, game! IPL 2021 is scheduled to resume on 19 September in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). CSK will face Mumbai Indians (MI) in the first match of the UAE leg at the Dubai International Stadium.

When the season was suspended in May, CSK were second on the table with 10 points from seven matches. Delhi Capitals (DC) were in pole position with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in third place and MI in fourth place.
The Chennai franchise will be hoping to build on their best performance from the first half of the season, and finish in the play-off spot in 2020 after a disappointing campaign.
