IPL 2021: ‘For an old man like me, I need to be as fresh as possible’

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman AB de Villiers said it is important for an old man like him to be as fresh as possible. He also said that the pitch was a bit sticky, which made it difficult to hit big shots in his first practice session after completing the quarantine.

In a video posted by RCB on Twitter, the 37-year-old was seen trying to hit the ball across the park. “Was very nice. The wicket was a bit sticky so it was actually quite tough. The bowlers bowled very well and it is humid here, we will sweat a lot which is good to lose a little weight but for an old man like me, I Need to be as fresh as possible,” de Villiers said.

“It was a great session and it’s nice to see everyone there. All the boys are looking very eager to go. I look forward to tomorrow’s practice match.”

The former South Africa captain felt good to be reunited with his RCB teammates after the first half of IPL 2021 in India. “Absolutely, I’ve missed people. I’ve met a few people and over the next few days I’ll have a chance to meet big guys. I’ve covered a few guys tonight and all the stories and stories by them over the past few months.” Nice to hear all the stories raised. Some interesting things have happened and it’s great to be together again as a team.

In between the practice sessions, de Villiers was seen doing some shadow batting. When asked about his rationale for shadow batting, de Villiers revealed, “Obviously as a player, you try to understand the little things about your technique, the little moves you make. We do. I have found a few trigger points that have helped me throughout my career. So, I try and get through the memory bank of the little things I used to do.”

“I have always cut and changed my technique as I have progressed and this is no different. This is the first time in a few months that I will be playing competitive cricket again. So, I’m trying to find the movement’s comfort zone at the crease, where my head position should be ‘A’ and that’s what I think of when I’m shadow batting,” concluded de Villiers.

Royal Challengers Bangalore will start the second half of IPL 2021 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi on 20 September. They are currently third in the points table with 10 points from seven matches.
