Rajasthan Royals took a big step towards making it to the playoffs by defeating Lucknow Super Giants in an IPL 2022 match at the Brabourne Stadium on Sunday. Chasing 179, LSG posted 154/8 in 20 overs, with RR winning by 24 runs.

The win was RR’s eighth win of the season and thus took their points to 16 – similar to LSG – but thanks to a better net run-rate, they swapped places with their opponents and are now in the IPL standings. I sat in second place.

Trent Boult struck twice in the same number of balls and then the famous Krishna struck early in the powerplay by dismissing LSG captain KL Rahul. LSG were in some early trouble at 29/3 when Deepak Hooda and Kunal Pandya got together.

The duo chased down the target with a 65-run stand for the fourth wicket, but Jos Buttler and Riyan Parag combined for a brilliant tag-team catch with Kunal Pandya getting the partnership out for 25. From them, LSG could not recover. Even though Hooda scored 59 off 39 to continue the fight.

Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 41 while Devdutt Padikkal made 39 off 18 balls as RR posted 178 for six. Captain Sanju Samson scored 32 runs in 24 balls after batting.

Ravi Bishnoi was the most successful bowler for LSG, scoring 2/31 in four overs.

Jaiswal made a confident start for the Royals in the first over with successive fours off Mohsin Khan. But RR was soon dealt a body blow when Avesh Khan knocked off in-form Jos Buttler (2) off-stump at the start of the third over as the batsman tried to scoop it to fine leg.

Early dismissal of Butler saw skipper Sanju Samson in the middle and, trying to regain his touch, he straight into action, caught Avesh over midwicket for a boundary.

Samson then plays a late cut against Mohsin and the ball flies over the slip cordon for a boundary. Then came a lovely cover drive from the RR captain’s blade as the team reached 25 for one in four overs.

Meanwhile, after receiving an awkward boundary, Jaiswal got a life when Mohsin dropped him on Avesh’s ball, failing to catch the ball despite catching him with both hands.

LSG paid heavily for carelessness on Mohsin’s part as Jaiswal made full use of the relief with Dushmantha Chamira scoring 21 runs for one in six power play overs.

He started the over with a boundary, found the fence twice, and then ended it in style, hitting a short ball from the Sri Lankan pacer over the midwicket region for a big six.

Even when Jaiswal was behind the bowling, the usually flamboyant Samson seemed content playing the second fiddle.

Samson, however, looked to be cut loose against Ravi Bishnoi as he hit him for two boundaries before Jason Holder brought about the former’s fall with a slow delivery to take a catch in the deep to Deepak Hooda in the next over.

Devdutt Padikkal came and scored 14 runs in 5 balls against Marcus Stoinis with the help of two fours and a six.

Padikkal then hit two boundaries off Chameera as RR crossed 100 in the 11th over.

However, at the other end, Jaiswal was caught by Ayush Badoni. But, unfazed by the loss to Set Jaiswal, Padikkal continued to play his shots and hit a six off Krunal Pandya.

Though going too high for one, Padikkal got caught in the deep.

LSG will next take on Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday while RRR will take on Chennai Super Kings in their lowest league match on Friday.
