Well, for academic purposes, IPL 2022 was slightly better than IPL 2021. But are RCB a team that should be satisfied with a consolation prize? Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis, Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, Josh Hazlewood – these stars were at the disposal of the franchise which are some of the biggest names in the world of T20 cricket. They have a team that can and should win the title. And not only in 2022. They had players like Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn, Shane Watson, Yuzvendra Chahal in the past. Still, his trophy cabinet is empty.

season high point

Rajat Patidar added. RCB’s top order was in dire need of a dependable batsman. Faf du Plessis was crucial and did well but Virat Kohli struggled for most parts and Anuj Rawat didn’t live up to the expectations. The Patidars came and confirmed their place. He was included in the middle of the season and scored fifty in his first innings. A few good knocks later, came his moment in the sun. In the Eliminator against LSG, Patidar single-handedly took them to a total of over 200 with a little help from Dinesh Karthik. Patidar scored a scintillating century – his first in the IPL and remained unbeaten on 112 – an innings which included 12 fours and seven sixes. In just seven innings, he scored 333 runs and was the only RCB batsman other than Karthik to average more than 50.

low point of the season

Being dismissed for 68 runs. RCB holds the dubious record of scoring the lowest innings in history. He posted the sixth lowest score in the history of the tournament when Sunrisers Hyderabad pacers took three wickets from Marco Jensen in the second over of the match. The highest individual score of RCB’s innings was 15 with nine players scoring in one digit. SRH chased down the target in 8 overs for the loss of one wicket.

captaincy decision

Faf gave a good account of himself. He was on point with the changes in his bowling and didn’t shy away from speaking his mind. In Kohli’s word – the South African will reject the former RCB captain’s suggestion if he does not agree with them. Faf, however, was a bit off-track in the second qualifier when he took Josh Hazlewood back after not bowling him first, considering him his best bowler of the night. RCB had posted a low score and needed a wicket early. Hazlewood bowled the second and sixth overs and then later in the middle overs but by then it was too late.

most valuable Player

Wanindu Hasaranga finished with 26 wickets which was the joint highest when RCB were out of the tournament. He was economical and controlled the innings in the middle overs with his variations, especially the googlies which got him more and more wickets. His 19 wickets came in the middle overs. And he also took a hat-trick against SRH, playing a starring role in avenging the earlier humiliation against him.

great disappointment

Mohammad Siraj now holds the unwanted record of hitting most sixes in an IPL season. The fast bowler, one of three retained by RCB, was hit for 31 sixes. He took 9 wickets in 15 matches and scored a lot of runs in the powerplay and death overs. He ended up with an economy of 10.07.

season verdict

There was little improvement in the last two seasons when they kept losing in Eliminator. This time, they advanced to the second qualifier. However, this time with the amount of talent he had, anything less than a final appearance would not count as a success.
