IPL 2023 Auction, DC Target Players: Replacement for Shardul Thakur High on Agenda

Last Update: December 20, 2022, 15:09 IST

Shardul Thakur was traded by DC to KKR.

Delhi Capitals traded Shardul Thakur to Kolkata Knight Riders and now they will have to find someone who can use the new ball effectively.

Unlike their performances in 2020 and 2021, where they reached the knockout stages, 2022 has given Delhi Capitals a reality check. The season was an inconsistent one and they had to wait till the last match against Mumbai Indians before Tim David sealed his fate with a fighting cameo. The middle-order failed to step up and it was clearly visible on the face of Rishabh Pant who himself was struggling with the bat. Delhi’s start to the season was stop-start. Besides this, he tried to win over captain Rishabh Pant, coach Ricky Ponting and assistant coach Pravin Amre by reprimanding them. Delhi’s batting line-up never came to the party except for David Warner; Captain Rishabh Pant’s average is 30, Prithvi Shaw’s average is 28-average, Akshar Patel’s batting average is lower. It was such a season. Now all eyes will be on him once again when he goes for a buy in the IPL 2023 auction.

Retained players: Rishabh Pant, David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Rovman Powell, Axar Patel, Kamlesh Nagerkoti, Mitchell Marsh, Sarfaraz Khan, Vicky Ostwal, Yash Dhull, Anrich Nortje, Chetan Sakaria, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi Ngidi, Mustafizur Rahman, Khaleel Ahmed, Lalit Yadav , Praveen Dubey, Ripple Patel

Released players: Shardul Thakur (Traded to KKR), Mandeep Singh (Released), KS Bharat (Released), Tim Seifert (Released), Ashwin Hebbar (Released)

Players to watch out for: Sam Curran: After the departure of Shardul Thakur, Delhi Capitals need a new bowler. In fact, given their composition, they needed an Indian bowling all-rounder. Being a rarity, Karan is the best available option. Even if they choose him, slotting him alongside Rovman Powell could be an issue. Curran has already proved his worth at CSK where he has scored 337 runs with the bat apart from taking 32 wickets in 32 matches.

Nicholas Pooran: Pooran, who has been in tremendous form of late in the Abu Dhabi T10, could be a good back-up for Rovman Powell. Also, his finishing skills could come in handy. He shrugged off West Indies’ T20I defeat with a stellar performance in the Abu Dhabi T10, where he not only won the player-of-the-tournament award for his 345 runs, which came at an average of 49.28, but also at an impressive 234.69. Along came the strike rate. Three fifties, but also took Deccan Gladiators to a consolation.

Rohan Kunnumal: Kunnumal can be an excellent back-up for Prithvi Shaw who can blow hot and cold. Young player from Kerala selected India A team to tour Bangladesh and has hit a purple patch in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy. With a base prize of INR 20 Lakh, the management will not be looking for high ROI which means they can afford to take risks. He has scored more than 500 runs in 19 domestic matches.

Purse Balance: 19.45 Crore
