NEW DELHI: BCCI is all set to make the bank laugh after its sale IPL TV and digital rights for the Indian subcontinent for Rs 44,075 crore, making it one of the richest sports entities.
According to the information received, Package A (Indian Subcontinent TV Rights) for 410 IPL matches in five seasons from 2023 to 2027 has been sold for Rs 23,575 crore, which is effectively Rs 57.5 crore per game.
As it happened: IPL media rights auction
However, it is the digital rights of the Indian subcontinent that stole the thunder with Rs 50 crore per game being offered by one of the bidders after being challenged by the winner of Package A. Package B fetched Rs 20,500 crore and thus overall BCCI has become richer by Rs 44,075 crore after selling the two packages.
When the auction closed on the second day, another Rs 2000 crore was bid for Package C, which has a select non-exclusive digital rights deal. The auction, which has moved to the third day, will resume with Package C on Tuesday.
So far, the board has garnered Rs 46,000 crore, which is two and a half times more than the 2018 auction price of Rs 16,347 crore.
As predicted by PTI, the final valuation will be around Rs 47,000 crore to Rs 50,000 crore.
The base price of TV was Rs 49 crore while that of digital rights was Rs 33 crore.
A BCCI official told PTI, “We have already reached the $5.5 billion mark after selling two packages. But the digital rights worth Rs 50 crore per match is massive. 51 per cent above the base price. The growth is phenomenal.” Condition of anonymity.
“Biding closes today at 6 pm and we are currently auctioning Package C, which has 98 games for five years in the non-exclusive digital category. 18 in the first two seasons and 20 and 24 in the next two seasons The final season. Then there will be Package D, which is the overseas rights for TV and digital.”
The break-up of 410 matches over five years is as follows: 74 matches each for 2023 and 2024. This rises to 84 matches in 2025 and 2026 and to 94 matches in 2027.
As per the rules of e-auction, the owners are given a secret code through which they bid. None of the BCCI office-bearers and employees are aware of the codes of the bidding companies.
The bidding started with an increment of Rs 50 lakh during the initial period and once the Package A winner challenged the highest bidder of Package ‘B’, the incremental bid price was Rs 1 crore.
No BCCI official could confirm who won both the packages.
It is believed that Sony and Walt Disney (Star) has fought a bidding for the TV rights. Traders say that Reliance-owned Viacom18, which has formed a consortium with Uday Shankar And James MurdochLupa Systems is said to be in the fray for Package B.
Whoever wins Package B will work harder in Package C because the broadcasters will want to maintain their exclusivity and losing a small package of marquee matches to another entity will not be a great business move.
Package D, which has a base price of Rs 3 crore for overseas TV and digital rights, will be a strong contender in Zee, which is being headlined at the auction by former BCCI CEO Rahul Johri.
A source close to the auction process said, “If Johri and Zee can win Package D and if Sony wins Package A, then the Zee-Sony partnership will make a fresh start. But wait till tomorrow.”
