iQOO 9T Review: Flagship Phone With Some Tricks Up Its Sleeves

iQOO began its journey as another brand in the market, but it would be hard to deny that its involvement has been deeper than we thought. The company has focused on various price segments and tried its best to be innovative and fresh. The same is true with its high-end phones, and the latest from the brand is the iQOO 9T which takes the mantra for affordable flagships in the market.

We have got the new iQOO phone for testing and what can we tell about the smartphone after a few weeks of usage.

iQOO 9T Design

When you take the phone out of the box, there really isn’t much to say about the iQOO 9T except that it does so in a subtle way. The phone is tall and wide compared to most of the devices we’ve used in recent months. It weighs around 206 grams which is solid but certainly not the easiest to hold. We have found the Legend variant of the iQOO 9T which has a glass body, metal finishing on the frame and a massive but sleek camera module at the back.

The power button is blue in color and right above it you have the volume control. The USB C charging port sits between the SIM slot and the bottom-facing speaker. So, yes, as we said, there is nothing unique or bad about the look and feel of the iQOO 9T.

iQOO 9T Display

The iQOO 9T has a display that isn’t excellent but it isn’t bad either. It has an AMOLED panel that supports 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ for your high-resolution Netflix streaming and 1500 nits peak brightness, providing good outdoor visibility.

iQOO 9T Review

Unlike premium phones, iQOO has opted to offer an LTPO 2.0 screen, so the refresh rate switches between 60Hz and 120Hz. To the naked eye, you won’t notice these differences, and the screen’s fluidity and pleasing contrast ratio will give you a decent viewing experience.

This is one aspect of the big screen that really comes in handy, especially when you’re streaming movies or favorite shows. The screen also gets Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and we didn’t notice a lot of scratches on it during our time with the device. Overall, we wish iQOO made some changes, but there isn’t much to complain about.

iQOO 9T Performance

iQOO has given the latest available hardware to its new smartphone, which is the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset built on the TSMC 4nm process. Performance will never be an issue with this phone, especially when you can opt for the 12GB RAM variant with virtually more expendable support. You get 256GB of storage which is not expandable like other phones in this segment.

iQOO 9T Review

You can multitask with ease on the phone, enjoy games at the highest graphics settings in even the most intense titles, and still have a lot left in the tank. This Snapdragon chip is much better than the first-gen 8 gen chipset. Not only that, you see how the hardware is able to handle the heat, but it never reaches the end point for you to feel the effect. Granted, iQOO has added its own layers to cool the device, but without the hardware taking effect, its impact would be negligible.

That being said, for a phone under Rs 50,000, the software is a drawback. It runs on Funtouch 12 version which has a lot of bloatware. You can remove them, but having them is not pleasant in the experience. Vivo and iQOO need to work on a better software strategy for their premium devices.

iQOO 9T Camera

The iQOO 9T has a capable set of cameras at the back. It has three sensors, which provide versatility and the given output is quite good in daylight conditions. The colors are rich, and the details intact. Even the ultrawide lens does a decent job of capturing the frame without losing subject detail. iQOO has also provided a telephoto camera in the phone. Low-light imaging was a mixed bag for us.

iQOO 9T Review

At times the extra lighting helped us take good pictures, but when you looked carefully, the details were wrong. iQOO is betting a lot on the cameras of this phone, so we’re hoping that some software tweaks can make it look better. The front camera is average, and the quality we got is clearly not at this phone’s price level.

iQOO 9T Battery

The iQOO 9T houses a 4700mAh battery but its effectiveness became apparent during our time with the device. Using this phone as our primary device for over 2 weeks, we got an average screen-on-time of around 6+ hours.

iQOO 9T Review

These figures are good, especially when we used the phone to access multiple social media apps, a fitness watch running 24×7, Bluetooth connected to the earbuds for a few hours, and web browsing. Call quality from the iQOO 9T on the Airtel network was also good, and we didn’t notice major issues from the device except when the network was poor in some areas. Club it with a 120W charger in the box, and the 4700mAh battery went from 0 to 80 percent in less than 20 minutes.

iQOO 9T Verdict

The iQOO 9T is a performance monster, and that’s also because it has such huge dimensions. The display is good enough for all purposes, and the use of the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset impressed us. The cameras also performed well during our tests, however, so we wish the low-light imaging had improved. The second major change that we would like is the software, too much bloatware spoils the experience of this phone.

Also, iQOO has not provided any IP rating or wireless charging support for this range of phones. It looks like these things are allowing you to have 120W charging speeds and reliable cameras in daylight. The iQOO 9T is a capable device, and alternatively, you can look at the OnePlus 10T 5G or even the Realme GT 2 Pro.
