Iron deficiency is a serious health problem, causing fatigue and exhaustion. Iron is a nutrient, and an extremely important mineral in our body, as it transports oxygen throughout our bodies. Dr Subhprakash Sanyal, Director, Department of Hematology and BMT, Fortis Hospital Mulund, told The Indian Express that iron is an important component of haemoglobin, the substance that carries oxygen from the lungs and carries it throughout your body. According to specialistHemoglobin represents two-thirds of the body’s iron, and the lack of red blood cells is called iron deficiency anemia.

How much iron does one need?

According to experts, the requirement of iron depends on the age, gender and overall health of the person. Babies and children need more iron than adults because their bodies are growing rapidly. The doctor said boys and girls need equal amounts in childhood — 10 milligrams (daily) at ages 4 to 8, and 8 milligrams (daily) at ages 9 to 13. He explained that women need more iron because they lose blood. every month. Therefore, women ages 19 to 50 need to get 18 milligrams of iron per day, while men of the same age may only get 8 milligrams of iron.

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, you can get iron from dietary sources or from iron supplements.
  • Have kidney failure (if you are undergoing dialysis, as it removes iron from the body).
  • Ulcer is because it causes loss of blood.
  • is a gastrointestinal disorder that prevents the body from absorbing iron.
  • Taking too many antacids also prevents the body from absorbing iron.
  • Have had weight loss (bariatric) surgery.
  • Exercise a lot because intense exercise destroys red blood cells.
  • If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, you’ll need to take an iron supplement, as the body doesn’t absorb the iron found in plants as well as iron from meat.

  • Meat like lamb, pork, liver, chicken, turkey.
  • Legumes (lentils, dried peas, beans.)
