Facebook has rebranded ‘Meta’, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on October 28, but more interestingly, he also announced the creation of ‘Metaverse’. In the founder’s letter, he wrote, “We are at the beginning of the next chapter for the Internet, and this is also the next chapter for our company. The letter goes deep into the workings of the Metaverse, where they say, everything imaginable. “In this future, you’ll be able to instantly teleport as a hologram to the office, to a concert with friends, or to your parents’ living room to catch up,” it says. However, many social media users were of the opinion that the Metaverse may not be the wonderland it is projected to be. On the contrary, it may be quite a dystopia. In fact, social media users are convinced. Zuckerberg’s idea of the Metaverse appears to have been inspired by Neil Stephenson’s dystopian sci-fi novel Snow Crash.
» The concept originated from Snow Crash, a dystopian novel from the 1990s in which people flee a collapsing real world to be completely immersed in a virtual world. … trying to retrieve Zuckerberg #metaverse As a utopian idea…« https://t.co/cjEGiiL2gg— Roland Meyer (@bildoperationen) October 28, 2021
The following paragraph from the founder’s letter became the subject of much conjecture: “The defining quality of the metaverse would be a sense of presence—like you are with another person or in some other place. Being truly present with another person is the ultimate of social technology.” The dream is there. That’s why we are focused on making it happen.” Many thought it descended directly from a dystopian novel, most notably “Snow Crash”.
I would argue that feeling somewhat present, rather than actually feeling present, only partially captured by whatever conversation is taking place, is what most people want most of the time from social technology. Oh and yes, sounds totally dystopian.—Antti Yerjonen (@anttiyr) October 28, 2021
How are we going to have this Metaverse launch and no one has managed to film Snow Crash? — Matthew Yglesias (@mattyglesias) October 28, 2021
Zuckerberg really looked at dystopian sci-fi and “yeah it sounds rad let’s make it” huh? — Joe Hart (@johart) October 29, 2021
A user also shared excerpts from ‘Snow Crash’ which explains why the internet is convinced about the similarities between the two concepts. “Leave a thought today for Neil Stephenson, who has lived long enough to see his stint for a dazzling digital distraction from increasingly dystopian reality become a corporate logo (and a dazzling digital one from increasingly dystopian reality). Distraction too),” he wrote. Below is the path they shared.
The 1992 novel takes place in the 21st century after a worldwide economic collapse. It resembles an anarchic-capitalist society, and according to many social media users, the novel was also the origin of the term “metaverse”. Many were also seen comparing the Metaverse to The Matrix and Ready Player One.
