ISL transfer news: SC East Bengal sign Dutch defensive midfielder Darren Sydoel

SC East Bengal on Friday strengthened their ranks with the acquisition of young Dutch defensive midfielder Darren Seidoel on a one-year deal that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2021-22 ISL season. Sidoel, who played for Spanish side H Arcules CF under SC East Bengal head coach Manuel Manolo’ Diaz, has become Spain’s fifth overseas signer. Slovenian midfielder Amir Dervi Ivic, Australian defender Tomislav Marcela, Croatian centre-back Franjo Prase and Nigerian striker Daniil Chima Chukwu are the four foreign recruits so far.

The 23-year-old Sidoel joins SC East Bengal from Spanish second division club C Rodoba CF, having spent the previous season on loan at H Arcules under Diaz’s tutelage.

Sydoel can also play at centre-back and central midfield positions, with a willingness to move the ball up the pitch.

SC East Bengal presents a new opportunity for me. I have played in some European countries and achieved a lot. I am eager to learn and I am confident that I can develop playing in the Indian Super League, said Sidoel.

I have played under coach (Manolo) in Spain before and that helps. We have a good understanding and I look forward to connecting with them again.

Part of the famous Ajax youth system, Sidol made his Dutch league (Erste Divisi) debut for Jong Ajax (Ajax’s reserve team) in the 2017 18 season, helping them win the title. He also participated in the UEFA Youth League for Ajax II.

Head coach Diaz said that I am happy to have Darren back in my plans. He has age and is hardworking. He can play on the full pitch and is a useful player. I have had a good conversation with him and he is eager to leave.

SCEB will face Jamshedpur FC in their opening match of the ISL on November 21 at the Tilak Maidan Stadium.
