It was an emotional moment for everyone when Virat Kohli stepped down as Test captain: Shardul Thakur

Indian seamer Shardul Thakur has revealed that no one expected from Team India that Virat Kohli would step down as Test captain after the South Africa series. Kohli relinquished Test captaincy after India’s 1-2 series loss against South Africa. The decision shook the cricketing world as the BCCI seemed unprepared for the transitional phase in red-ball cricket.

Emerged as match-winners for India in all three formats under the leadership of Shardul Kohli. The 30-year-old has the ability to pick up important wickets and has proved his batting down the order in recent times and has become a valuable asset to the team.

The Mumbai cricketer said that it was an emotional moment for all when Kohli announced his decision as India performed extremely well under his leadership in overseas conditions.

“It was an emotional moment for everyone. No one expected him to step down from Test captaincy. We did well under his captaincy, especially overseas. The series we lost overseas were close. Under his leadership The team was performing well and no one expected it. However, now that they have taken their decision, everyone should respect it,” Thakur told The Indian Express.

The 30-year-old further spoke about India’s loss to South Africa in the Test series where the Proteas bowler failed to defend the 200-plus target twice on earth.

“Luck was not on our side in those two Test matches. Many times his batsman edged, but the ball got short or flew over us. We realized later that the edge would not move, so our fielders got closer. We were unlucky many times. Once they were 150 for 3 and we got them out. Once you’re chasing 200-plus, the dressing room believes it’s worth a chase. But if the target is more than 300 in the fourth innings, then the pressure starts building. We lost those two Test matches because our bowling and fielding units didn’t take luck with them.”

Shardul is part of the Indian squad for the upcoming limited overs series against West Indies. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar, Sharul will have a big responsibility of the bowling attack.
