“It Was The Shamelessness Of The Central Government That…”: Supreme Court Remarks On AAP Leader Saurabh Bhardwaj In MCD Mayor Election Case

AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said, the central government did not run the proceedings of the houses thrice by dishonesty

New Delhi :

The election of the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will no longer be held on February 16. The Supreme Court will now hear the matter on February 17. During the hearing in the MCD Mayor election case, the Supreme Court said that the nominated councilors cannot vote and the constitutional provisions are clear in this regard. Reacting to this remark of the Supreme Court, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bhardwaj has focused on the central government and the BJP. Bhardwaj said, “It is a well-settled law that nominated councilors cannot vote. Mayor’s election is the first reasoning and mayor is the only other two elections are near. But it was a great shamelessness of the central government that after winning the election of a small MCD, He didn’t run the proceedings of the House by cheating 3 times.”

Unni said, “You have taken this matter to the country’s biggest court (Supreme Court). When our lawyer said that the nominated councilor was being forced to vote, the court said that it is in law that They cannot vote. Secondly, the court said that until the Supreme Court decides, the central government and the LG should not forcefully elect the mayor. We thank the court very much that there is such an institution in the country today. It is left where there is rule of law. It is not.

It is interesting that on 6th and 24th January and 6th February the councilors of Delhi Municipal Corporation held a meeting regarding the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party, but the election of the mayor could not be held. The municipal corporation meeting was canceled amid heavy protests by members of the Aam Aadmi Party after 10 councilors nominated by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) were allowed to vote. The Aam Aadmi Party emerged as the winner in the MCD elections held in December. They captured 134 wards and ended BJP’s 15-year rule in civic bodies. The BJP had secured the second position by winning 104 wards, while the Congress could win only nine seats.
