In an anonymous post, fifth year architecture students of Kolkata’s Jadavpur University have accused Dr Shivashish Bose, a university professor, of sexual misconduct.
The complaint letter states that the professor sexually harassed several girl students of different batches. On October 18, 2022, the students finally turned in a General Diary (GD) against the accused at Jadavpur Police Station. Additionally, a complaint was filed with the Council of Architecture and the National Commission for Women.
A media report by EdexLive said that the general diary, signed by 35 students, contained references to inappropriate conversations between the professor and his students under several circumstances. The letter reportedly stated, “From taking pictures to making inappropriate comments like how a girl looks and is easily recognizable from behind, what can a girl do to look more beautiful and even that different female students can also compare different body measurements.”
The students also alleged that the professor made comments that were inappropriate in every sense, and that there was no circumstance that calls for such remarks about female students. The report also stated that she also “objectified the girls” in front of the boys in the class.
Earlier, the University’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) had lodged a complaint and arranged their first meeting with the students on September 22. However, the students claimed that the process has been unnecessarily delayed and the behavior of the members has been careless. As the ICC continues its investigation, students continue to protest on the university campus.
A student at the UC Davis School of Law, Raya Sarkar on October 24, 2017 added the professor’s name at number 56 to the list of sexual harassers in academia (Losha). Nine other professors of Jadavpur University are also included in the list. , There have been several cases of sexual harassment of girl students in Jadavpur University, where the police have been called. Kolkata Police arrested Professor Harkan Neidan Toppo in July after he was charged with “attempting to rape a researcher in June this year”.
