Hyderabad:

YS Sharmila, daughter of the late Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh YS Rajasekhara Reddy, walked 4,000 km across Telangana, just like her father did in 2003 and became chief minister the following year.

Sharmila, 47, began her journey on Wednesday and intends to cover 12-15 km every day next year in her mission to oust the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

Ms Sharmila, who launched the YSR Telangana Party on her father’s birth anniversary on July 8, has alleged that only Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s family has benefited from the formation of Telangana. She says 7,000 farmers have died by suicide in the last seven years, many people have lost their jobs and 1.90 lakh jobs that were supposed to be notified never happened.

The YSR Telangana Party leader had covered 3,000 km on foot in 2013 when her brother Jagan Mohan Reddy was in jail. Her party, the YSR Congress, which is in power in neighboring Andhra Pradesh, distanced itself from Sharmila’s political activity.

However, Ms. Sharmila has got the support of her mother, who actually flagged off the march on October 20 and appealed to the public to support Ms. Sharmila as the daughter of Telangana.

Ms. Sharmila is interacting personally with the villagers during the foot march.

He has targeted both the Congress and the BJP and accused them of joining hands with the ruling TRS.

“BJP says they have evidence of corruption against TRS leaders, but they will not make it public. Congress leader (Rewant Reddy) calls our party an NGO. Yes, we are not for profit and here to serve. Whereas that leader was caught in an act of corruption,” she says.

Both YSR and Jagan Mohan Reddy have used foot marches to climb to the seat of power. Ms. Sharmila is yet to induct any political stalwart in her party. He is also said to have taken the services of Prashant Kishor, who helped the YSR Congress in the 2019 elections.
