Former Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected Vice President on Saturday. She beat the opposition’s Margaret Alva to emerge the winner.

  1. The BJP-led NDA candidate comfortably won the election with 528 votes against Ms. Alva’s 182, for which voting was held earlier today. The Vice President is also the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

  3. The Returning Officer for Vice Presidential Elections said that out of the total 780 voters, 725 cast their votes but 15 were found to be invalid. Voter turnout was 92.94 per cent, he said, adding that a candidate needs 356 votes to be elected.

  4. The Trinamool Congress, which has a total of 36 MPs, including 23 in the Lok Sabha, had avoided the election. However, two of its MPs voted. 55 MPs did not cast their vote in the Vice Presidential election held on Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm.
