External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives in a stampede at a football match in Indonesia. at least 125 people killed,
“Deeply saddened by the tragedy at the football stadium in Kanjuruhan Malang. My condolences to the bereaved families and our Indonesian friends. Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured,” Jaishankar tweeted.
Violence broke out at a stadium in East Java during a game between Arema and Persebaya Surabaya. At least 125 people were killed in the stampede on Sunday afternoon, East Java’s deputy governor Emil Dardak told local media. As a result, cases of suffocation were reported due to the stampede.
After the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya in East Java province ended on Saturday night, supporters of the losing team invaded the pitch to express their disappointment, police said. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Sunday that the riots at a football match and the stampede that followed is a “dark day” for the sport.
FIFA issued an official statement in which President Gianni Infantino said that the football world is in a state of shock following the tragic events. “The football world is in a state of shock following the tragic events that happened in Indonesia at the end of the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at Kanjuruhan Stadium.”
“It is a dark day and a tragedy beyond comprehension for all involved in football. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives in the aftermath of this tragic event,” he said.
Several top football clubs around the world, including Manchester City, Manchester United and Barcelona, offered condolences to the families affected by the horrific incident. Manchester United tweeted: “Manchester United are deeply saddened by the tragedy in Malang, Indonesia. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims, their families and all those affected.”
“Paris Saint-Germain would like to express its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the stadium tragedy in Malang, Indonesia,” Paris Saint-Germain tweeted.
Liverpool Football Club tweeted: “We are deeply saddened to hear about the events at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, Indonesia. All of Liverpool Football Club’s condolences are with those affected at this time.”
