Jamia’s AC, EC yet to approve implementation of National Education Policy – Times of India

New Delhi: The academic and executive councils of Jamia Millia Islamia are yet to approve the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) in the university, though the new academic session is set to begin in two months.

Although the NEP is approved in-principle by the university, it requires the seal of the Academic Council (AC) and the Executive Council (EC) to be implemented.

The registrar of Jamia Millia Islamia, Nazim Hussain Al Jafri, said the process of approving the NEP is underway and will be done before July 15. The NEP, approved by the Union Cabinet, replaces the 34-year-old National Policy on Education formulated in 1986 and aims to pave the way for transformational reforms in school and higher education systems to make India a global knowledge superpower.

Explaining the process of approving any change in the education policy, Jafri said that usually a committee is formed which submits its report seeking recommendations from the heads of various departments.

The new policy is then approved by the Faculty Committee and then presented to the Academic Council.

“After approval by the Academic Council, the policy is sent to the Executive Council, the highest statutory body of the university,” he said.

Though the NEP is yet to be approved, various departments have started finalizing the syllabus for the four-year undergraduate programmes.

The departments are holding discussions and deliberations to prepare the curriculum.

“The syllabus is expected to be finalized by July 15,” Jafri said.
